Lydia

I am fuming. I’ve never been so insulted and humiliated in my life.

For all the sweet words that he whispered in my ear while we made love. For all the fun banter that we shared while we were alone together. For every kiss and gentle touch he gave me all I can feel now are streaks of rage growing within me. How dare he treat me that way? He’s supposed to care about me and this is how he decides to treat me??

I realize now that it’s all a lie and that truth hurts like a shard of glass in my chest. Every bit of our time together was a complete fabrication and I fell for it once again. Just like with Bill. She fell for the same promise of forever only to find this horrible creature where the love of my life was supposed to be. Surprise, surprise. James has turned out to be just like every man I’ve ever encountered. He used me for sex, then the very second that things got a little too rough, he attacked me and treated me like I was his enemy all along.

And the thing is, I would have stood by him. Mentally, I was there. I was ready to be by his side when we finally went public. As gruff as he’d been when we first met, I started to see him as a kind and gentle soul. The way he took care of Eloise and his ranch and even the horses…the way he loved his life lumps and all how he wanted to include me in it…

Fuck me. Fuck me for falling for it all.

It’s started to rain now that I’m on the road, but I’ve only just now noticed it. It doesn’t matter. I just need to get back to the ranch and pack my shit before he comes home. I want to be on my way back to the city well before he gets back.

By the time I pull up to the ranch, I start noticing how windy it is…and how black the sky is starting to look. It’s nighttime in the country, and it usually gets pretty dark outside at night, but it’s still just a few hours past sunset. The sky shouldn’t be so close to the pitch. I don’t even see any stars through the clouds overhead. I might have to stop off at a hotel to wait out the storm…

Whatever I do, though, I’m leaving. That’s all there is to it. One way or another, I am going to be out of this hick town and on my way to the real part of my life. The part where I’m making something of herself without working for some egotistical asshole.

I walk into the house and go straight to my room. I get my suitcase and started packing, throwing my clothes in the bag quickly and angrily.

During the process, my phone buzzes. I pause long enough to look at it, only to see that it’s Bella.
